About Me

I am Richard Varner, and I am running for the seat of Texas House of Representatives district 142.

I was a search and rescue aircrewman in the US Coast Guard for over 21 years. After the Coast Guard, I worked for a railroad for over 10 years. I am currently an instructional designer in higher education and have been in that profession for over 3 years.

The three areas I wish to focus on are homelessness, education and immigration. I have some ideas I think will help in those areas, but I'm also interested in what you think. Please reach out to me at the following email: I appreciate your input.

US Coast Guard

I began my journey in the Coast Guard in 1984. In 1986, I attended aircraft electrician's school. After graduation, I was sent to Kodiak AK, where I learned to be a search and rescue aircrewman.

My subsequent assignments were two tours in Florida, a tour in Hawaii, and two more tours in Alaska.

I retired in 2005 in Clearwater FL.

I worked as a Signalman for a Class 1 railroad for over ten years. My experience led me to see the importance of transportation safety and efficiency. Our economy needs a world class transportation system.

In 2013, I began to write a maintenance and repair manual for some of the equipment I worked on as a railroad signalman. I found out I loved writing my manual. I created it at my own expense and on my own time. I loved it so much, I would become engrossed in it and I would sometimes even forget to eat.

That's when I decided to go back to school to become an Instructional Designer. It took about 5 years, and every evening after work and every weekend I studied. School was just what I did.

Then, in 2018, I was hired by a university in Texas. I have been an instructional designer ever since and I love what I do.

Pleas donate to my campaign if you want to support me and are able to.
